LIGHTS FOR HOPE is a Christmas outreach program of the Office of Planning and Development and Alumni Affairs* initiated by Fr. Carmelo A. Caluag II S.J. in 2001 to bring cheer and hope to children of indigent families and family members of employees of the Ateneo de Manila University. The first LIGHTS FOR HOPE program was held on December 21 in 2001, 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Bellarmine Field for 300 children. The Bellarmine Field in the Ateneo Loyola Heights Campus has become the venue for the yearly LIGHTS FOR HOPE.

LIGHTS FOR HOPE evolved into a Christmas treat for poor children from the apostolate areas of the Jesuit scholastics and has grown to take care of 500 to 1,000 children, ages 7 to 12, at each Lights for Hope outreach to consist of a day in December of a Christmas program with a magician, games, carnival rides, giant inflatable slides, and merienda at Bellarmine Field, and take-home goody bags for all. The children are from depressed communities in Payatas, Balara, Loyola Heights, and Marikina where Jesuit scholastics and the members of the Social Organizations of the Ateneo (SOA) do their apostolate work. More and more alumni and students have become involved in preparing for the annual Christmas treat for the children, up to the packing of the goody bags which begins days before the program, up to their distribution when the children arrive at the Ateneo. Through the years we have had children guests from Payatas, Project 3, Marikina, Cainta, and Antipolo.

The LIGHTS FOR HOPE program is sustained by funding and donations in kind by various Ateneo alumni individuals and groups such as the AAA and the Jubilarian classes, as well as individual alumni and students with the Ateneo sports groups such as football, baseball, and softball. 100 student volunteers have been attending to the children for the duration of the visit at the Bellarmime Field. For the LIGHTS FOR HOPE 2010, 500 student and staff volunteers will attend to the anticipated 1,500 children.
